Incunabulum v2.0?

Beyond her, a dark future is already taking shape. The temple persists inside its machines: columns become conduits, sacred geometry threads through circuitry, and a terrible light finds its way into the present.

Between us and that world is the numinous. Anna’s face emerges at the boundary, familiar enough to draw us closer, immense enough to make us afraid. We can glimpse what lies beyond. We cannot yet know what crossing will make of us.

The numinous is the threshold. Incunabulum is the sound reaching through.

An incunabulum is a book from the infancy of European printing: one of the books printed before 1501. The name comes from the Latin for swaddling clothes or a cradle. Here, it becomes an idea: something made at the beginning of a medium, while the world is still discovering what that medium will change.

Around 1450, Gutenberg’s work with movable metal type helped transform the production of books in Europe. Printing made it possible to reproduce and circulate texts on a scale that changed who could encounter them. Over time, it reshaped the relationship between people, information, and knowledge.

In the ’90s, we were promised a world “at our fingertips.” The information superhighway brought extraordinary access. But information travelling down a highway still ends up parked somewhere: on a page, in an archive, behind a search result. Books on bookshelves, multiplied beyond imagining. A profound improvement in reach, while something familiar remained in the encounter: find the source, open it, read it, work out what it means.

Incunabulum v2.0 begins with the thought that AI could bring a change as fundamental as the one printing brought to books. Access becomes an exchange. You ask, question the answer, approach it from another direction. Information can be connected, explained, and reshaped around the enquiry as it unfolds. The relationship itself begins to change.

This is the parallel behind the name. We are making the earliest artifacts of a new medium before we understand the world it will produce. Its possibilities are immense. So are the questions of trust, authorship, and who gets to shape what we know.

What will that relationship look like in 2050? What will it mean to learn, to create, to recognize a voice, or to become one?
